Mario Mims was born on 19th May, 1981 in Memphis, Tennese, United States and was raised in the notorious crime obsessed neighbourhoods in Ridge Crest housing projects.

Both his parents as well as uncles and aunts were hustlers and thus, he was introduced to the Memphis criminal part of the society almost from birth. Mims in a conversation once said ‘Being from the hood, things like hustling will come your way’.

Yo Gotti was born in a middle-class family. His father was a gym instructor of of Zimbabwe origin while his mother was of South African origin. Nothing is known of his educational past. He was brought up in a religious family and he follows Christianity as his religion.

When Mario was in 2nd grade, police raided their house and his parents and other family members were arrested. He thus, had to fend for the household so he started thugging on the streets.

They called him Yo (short for his given name, Mario) and added the Gotti surname later because of his affinity for doing things kids his age typically didn’t do. Rather than feel as though his opportunities were limited, he chose to focus on becoming successful.

He is among the many hardcore rappers who came out of hip-hop’s Dirty South school in the late ’90s. He is also one of the hip-hoppers who derive part of their stage names from the late New York mafioso John Gotti.

After performing around Memphis in the ’90s, Gotti started building a catalog in the early 2000s. His self-created buzz in Memphis lead to a deal with TVT Records.

His first studio album will be called Live From The Kitchen and the album’s first single was titled “5 Star” and it was released on May 20, 2009. His second single was “Women Lie, Men Lie and was release in December 2009.

In 2010 he released his third single “Look In the Mirror”. His street albums make serious noise without a major push, he stays on the road performing paid shows and he’s gotten more than 24 million plays on his MySpace page.
