Biography – Early Life/Education
On the 20th of July, 1977, in East Hampton, New York, Tim Ferriss was born to low-income parents whose names are not known.
As the story goes, Ferriss’ parents did not make or have much money, which means that they were not able to give their child everything that he wanted.
But they, however, made sure to always buy books for him to read, something that he said helped develop his love for learning.
At around the age of 8, his mother enrolled him for wrestling classes because he was bullied a lot by other kids due to his size.
With the help of his grandparents and academic scholarships, Ferriss was able to attend St. Paul’s School, an elite Concord New Hampshire boarding school.
While there, he was able to spend a year in Japan as an exchange student.
His experience in the East Asian country sparked his interest in learning about other cultures. As a result of this, he decided to pursue a degree in East Asian Studies at Princeton University.
During his time at Princeton, Tim Ferriss became disillusioned with life as he suffered from depression and contemplated suicide.
He eventually decided to take a year off, which he spent in China working odd jobs and teaching Japanese, before returning to graduate in 2000.
After his graduation, Ferriss worked in the sales department of a data storing company before deciding to move to Silicon Valley, California to start his company, and the rest became history.
The writer, who worked at a data storage company before starting his own internet business and later becoming an early-stage tech startup investor, made a huge chunk of his wealth from selling off his company; BrainQUICKEN to a London-based private equity firm and from the sales of his books.
He has so far written five books out of which two were number 1 New York Times bestsellers.
His notable works include The 4-Hour Workweek, The 4-Hour Body, The 4-Hour Chef, Tools of Titans, and Tribe of Mentors.
The media star is further said to have small equity stakes in companies like Twitter, Uber, and Facebook.
With such huge wealth, it is no surprise to see that Ferriss frequently gives out money to support charities and other notable causes he holds dear to his heart.
As a member of the National Advisory Council of the public school nonprofit, DonorsChoose, he has helped raise more than $250,000 for teachers and classroom projects at underfunded public schools.
He also flash-funded about 145 school projects that were posted on the DonorsChoose website.
These efforts earned him the BUILDer Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship from the not-for-profit organization, BUILD Boston.
Another notable charitable effort he has made is donating up to $100,000 to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for the research of psychedelic drugs for the treatment of major depression.
