Early Life, Family and Education

Swea Lee was born Khalif Malikibnsham Brown to a single mother named Bernadette Walker in Inglewood California on June 5, 1995. Details about his father are unknown aside from the fact that he walked away from his family soon after Lee’s birth.

Due to his mother’s work with the United States Army, the family moved around the states very often, living in Mississippi, Maryland, and Texas.

While in Texas at the Fort Hood military post, Swea Lee and his older brother/future collaborator in the Rae Sremmurd group, Slim Jxmmi, began writing music and went on to teach themselves how to record songs with online software.

While in middle school, their mother left the army and had to move again. This time it was back to Mississippi where she had moved in with a new companion. The family settled in Tupelo, Mississippi, living in the Ida Street Housing Projects, a known poverty ridden and high crime section of the city.

Swae Lee has been in an on-again-off-again relationship with Instagram model Marliesia Ortiz. It is not clear if the two are currently together following her alleged attack and robbery of a girl reported to be her boyfriend’s mistress.

She was also recently in the news for accusing Rob Kardashian’s ex-fiancee, Blac Chyna, of performing oral sex on her boyfriend.

After graduating high school, Swae Lee focused all his attention on his craft, looking at music as a way out of poverty. He formed a hip-hop rap group with his brother and a friend named Jemiah Middlebrooks, calling themselves Dem Outta State Boyz.

Swae Lee has revealed that he and his brother spent a good number of nights sleeping on the streets before catching their big break. This was because their mother kicked them out for skipping school and coming home very late at night.

The boys went on to release their first track titled ‘Party Animal’ which earned them local celebrity status. It also opened up doors for them to perform at local clubs and shows as opening acts while also garnering a huge following online.

After failing to get the attention of any big music executives, the brothers decided to move to Atlanta, a decision that turned out to be the best thing for their music career.

Out in Atlanta, the brothers met famed hip-hop producer Mike Will Made It who was impressed by their work and offered them a record deal. They signed on to Ear Drummers Entertainment under the moniker Rea Sremmurd, which is Ear Drummers spelled backward.

The duo started producing tons of songs, eventually releasing the hit single ‘No Flex Zone’ in 2014. The song went straight to the top of the charts, giving room for even better success for their second single ‘No Type’ which debuted at number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 list.

Their first studio album was eventually released in 2015 to critical and commercial acclaim. In total, the duo has released three studio albums; SremmLife, SremmLife 2, and SR3MM selling millions of records along the way.

As a solo artist, Swae Lee has featured on a number of other artists’ records as well as produced a number of them. His first solo foray into music was in 2015 on Mike Will’s track titled ‘Drinks on Us’ then on Wiz Khalifa’s ‘Burn Slow’.

His biggest showing was on French Montana’s ‘Unforgettable’. In May 2018, he released his debut solo album titled Swaecation vol. 1.
