Samuel Paul Kershaw was born on February 24, 1958, in Kaplan, Louisiana, U.S. Popular singers Rusty and Doug Kershaw are his cousins.
When he was eleven years old, his grandfather gave him a guitar as a present. In the same year, his father died, so Kershaw started doing various odd jobs, such as playing roadhouses at night to support his family.
He also played at several honky-tonks and beer joints. When he was a teenager, Kershaw opened shows for George Jones, Ray Price, and Merle Haggard.
He also did a part-time job as a remodeling supervisor at Wal-Mart.
Kershaw is the third cousin of singers Rusty and Doug Kershaw and was born in the Acadiana town of Kaplan, located in south Louisiana.
His grandfather gifted him his first guitar when he was seven years old.
Sadly, his father died that same year, prompting Kershaw to start working a variety of day jobs while playing roadhouses at night to support his family.
He began performing with Louisiana legend J.B. Pere in Acadiana.

On October 1997, he freed Love of My Life as the lead-off single from his album Labor of Love which was written by Keith Stegall and Dan Hill.
