Ronaldo de Assis Moreira was born on March 21, 1980, in Porto Alegro, Brazil. Ronaldo grew up with one older brother Ricardo and a sister Deisi. His father was a shipyard worker, while his mother was a saleswoman, but studied to become a nurse.

His father suffered from a heart attack when Ronaldo was only eight years old and the family was left with very little income. His older brother was also a football player, and when he signed a contract with a club in Guaruja, the family had to move there.

His brother’s career ended when he suffered from a serious injury. Ronaldo never played football before, but at the age of eight, he started to play with his friends and in school. He was soon named Ronaldinho, which actually a diminutive nickname because he was usually the smallest and youngest on the team.

His talent soon started to emerge and during one game, when he was only 13, the media recorder his amazing 23 goals against a local football team. His first encounter with professional or team football was in the Gremio youth squad, and from then the rest is history.
