Phil was born on 21 December 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. His nationality is American and ethnicity is Irish Catholic.

His full name is Phillip John “Phil” Donahue. His mother’s name is Catherine/Katherine (McClory) and father’s name is Phillip Donahue. His father was a furniture salesman and his mother was a shoe clerk. However, his parents divorced. Later, his father remarried Marlo Thomas.

Talking about the siblings, he has three brothers, Michael, Kevin and Daniel and sister, Mary Rose. Phil graduated from St. Edward High School in the Cleveland. Later, in 1957, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana for the bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Phil Donahue started his career as a production assistant on KYW radio and WKYC-TV.  After graduation from college. he became program director for WABJ radio in Adrian, Michigan. He became a stringer for CBS Morning News.

Later he served as an anchor at WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio. Phil Donahue hosted a talk show named Conversation Piece. 

He hosted the show from 1963 to 1967 on WHIO radio. Besides these, he had done various interviews. He had interviewed different personalities including, ‘Jimmy Hoffa’ ‘Billie Sol Estes’ ‘John F. Kennedy’ and ‘Johnny Carson’. Phil has also interviewed heavyweight boxing champions, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

Phil Donahue left the WHIO-TV in the year 1967 on 6th of November. Later Phil became the host of a new television program, Phil Donahue Show on WLWD. The show was broadcasted by multiple television stations and radio stations from January 1970.

The Phil Donahue Show entered nationwide syndication. The show moved to Chicago in the year 1974. Later in 1984, the show moved to New York City. Donahue has also appeared  NBC’s The Today Show as a contributor, from 1979 until 1988.

Later from 1991 to 1994, Phil co-hosted Pozner/Donahue. Besides these, he also co-hosted the show U.S.–Soviet Space Bridge along with Soviet journalist Vladimir Pozner. The show is a series of televised discussions among the citizens of the Soviet Union and the United States.

Phil joined the television in July 2002. He returned to host a show called Donahue on MSNBC. Unfortunately, the show was canceled by MSNBC on February 25, 2003. Later in 2006, he served as co-director for the documentary film Body of War.

He worked along with filmmaker Ellen Spiro for the documentary. The film was listed as one of the movies to be considered for an Oscar nomination in the November 2007 by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
