He grew up with his two brothers, Tom, and Karl and a sister named Elisa. Peter also has two nephews Jackson and River Stefanovic and a niece, Ava.

Peter began his career as a journalist since his debut in WIN Television in 2002, reporting for WIN News in both Rockhampton and Canberra. He joined Nine Network in 2004 as a reporter for Nine News. He spent many years in Los Angeles and London bureaus, serving as a foreign correspondent for Nine Network and returned to Australia in mid-2015.
After serving correspondent for many years, he worked for 60 minutes as a senior reporter and presenter while Allison Langdon was on maternity leave.
In early 2016, Peter co-hosted Weekend Today along with Deborah Knight until 2017.
