Biography

Newt Gingrich was born—Newton Leroy Gingrich—in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA, on June 17, 1943; to parents Newton Searles McPherson and Kathleen Daugherty.

His parents were married in September of 1942. However, the union fell apart within days. When little Newt clocked three, his mother married Robert Gingrich; an Army officer who served tours in Korea and Vietnam. Gingrich adopted Newt.

In 1956, when Newt was thirteen, the family moved to Europe and lived in Orléans, France and Stuttgart, Germany.

He spent the most part of his childhood in Hummelstown and on several military bases where his father was stationed.

Gingrich has three younger half-sisters, Roberta Brown, Candace and Susan Gingrich. He also has a half-brother from his father’s side, Randy McPherson.

Gingrich attended Baker High School in Columbus, Georgia where he graduated from in 1961. He then proceeded to Emory University in Atlanta where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1965.

He attended Tulane University, where he earned an M. A. in 1968 and a Ph.D. in European history in1971. Between 1969 and 1970, Gingrich spent six months in Brussels working on his dissertation titled Belgian Education Policy in the Congo 1945–1960.

Professionally, Gingrich got his start as an assistant professor with the history department of West Georgia College, in 1970.

Four years later, he moved to the geography department where he helped establish an interdisciplinary environmental studies program.

This feat placed him on the university’s tenure track. He, however, left his work in college in 1978 when he was elected to Congress. As Congressman, Gingrich co-founded the Military Reform Caucus (MRC) and the Congressional Aviation and Space Caucus.

Newt Gingrich also supported a proposal to ban loans from the International Monetary Fund to Communist countries and endorsed a bill to make Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday a national holiday.

In 1983, Gingrich founded the Conservative Opportunity Society (COS), a group that originally included young conservative House Republicans such as Robert Smith Walker, Judd Gregg, Dan Coats, and Connie Mack III. Group members met weekly to share and develop ideas.

In the run-up to the November 1994 elections, Republicans clinched 54 seats and took the reins of the House for the first time since 1954.

In a stroke of fate, House Minority Leader Bob Michel of Illinois had chosen not to run for re-election, this made Gingrich the highest-ranking Republican returning to Congress that year. Time magazine eventually named Gingrich its 1995 “Man of the Year” for his role in the election.

As Speaker of the House, Gingrich made efforts to infuse Christian conservative values into the Republican Party.

A 2018 study posited that Christian conservatism had become entrenched in the Republican Party’s policy platforms at the turn of the new millennium.

A good number of scholars also credited Gingrich with taking up a crucial role in undermining democratic norms in the United States and hastening political polarization and partisan prejudice within United States politics. All of which he denies.

Following a disturbingly crushing election for the Republicans in the 1998 elections, the Republicans were forced to rebel against their speaker-overlord, who happened to retain his seat, albeit by a slight margin.

The outcome of the drama trailing the revelations of an extramarital affair Gingrich had with a congressional employee 23 years his junior saw Newt Gingrich’s resignation from the house altogether in January of 1999.

Following his resignation, Gingrich has continued to air his opinions in national politics and public policy debates.
