Both his parents are Puerto Rican. He was raised in a Hispanic neighborhood of Inwood and growing up, the young Miranda was always sent on a 1 month holiday with his grandparents in Peurto Rica each year.
Education
His early education was at Hunter College Elementary School after which he proceeded to Hunter College High School. Miranda graduated from Wesleyan University in 2002 having majored in Theatre studies.
As a student, he wrote and performed in several musicals, the initial drafts for his highly successful Broadway musical In the Heights were written in his sophomore year in college.
