Oliver was born on 23 April 1977. He was born in  Erdington, West Midlands, England. His birth name was John Oliver itself. He was the son of Carole and Jim Oliver.

His father worked as a Social Worker and as a headmaster of a school too. His mother was a music teacher. He was fostered in Erdington.

He is British by nationality and his ethnicity is mixed(American-British). Since his childhood, he was a great fan of Liverpool F.C. and he dreamt of becoming a football player.


After completing his secondary school, Oliver went to  Christ’s College, Cambridge. Oliver graduated from The Christ’s College with a degree in English in 1998.


Currently, he is working as a host in a  show called Last Week Tonight on HBO. In 2001 Oliver first appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He had performed his debut show in 2002. Oliver’s career has many twist and turns.

In 2004 and 2005 he allied with Andy Zaltzman on a double act and co-hosting Political Animal, with various acts performing the political material radio show that eventually moved to BBC 4.

He began to perform in small clubs after moving to  New York City for The Daily Show. Oliver’s first standup John Oliver: Terrifying Times, debuted on Comedy Central in 2008.

Later it was released on DVDs also. Since 2014 he has been hosting  Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, a late-night talk show. Currently, he is working on his show Last Week Tonight; telecasted in HBO.


John Oliver has won many awards in his career so far. In 2009 he won the award of Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Series.

He also won the Writers Guild of America Awards in 2009. Again in 2011, he won the Primetime Emmy Awards. Similarly, in 2o14/15/16/17 and 18 he consecutively won various awards for his show and works.

Recently he won The Peabody award for his show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. So far Oliver’s career has been fruitful.
