Murray was born in Staten Island, New York City, New York on May 1, 1976, as James Stephen Murray. Most of the information relating to his early life and childhood years is not known. He is of American nationality. Additionally, he is of British ethnic background.

Talking about his education, Murray attended  Monsignor Farrell High School and graduated in 1994. Furthermore, he attended Georgetown University from 1994–1998.

In 2014 James Murray got married to Sal Vulcano’s sister Jenna Vulcano in a church surrounded by family and close friends. Jenna Vulcano was also the part of the impractical joker’s group.

Conversely, from any other wedding expectation, their wedding didn’t last long truly they didn’t even stay married for a week. Murray and Vulcano got married and got divorced within 24 hours of the wedding.

Murray is openly gay. In 2016 his friend Sal Vulcano admitted being gay on the talk show which encouraged Murray and he also admitted he is gay. But later, Vulcano confessed that he was not gay and just wanted to motivate Murray to help him come out.

Initially, the group of 4 comedians that form The Tenderloins met each other at a Staten Island High School. The group won a $100,000 prize through a competition on NBC. Eventually, the group launched a TV show on TruTV called ‘Impractical Jokers’ in 2011.

The group consists of Sal Vulcano, Mike Boccio, and Joe Gatto.
