The 22nd and current Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi is a cricketer turned politician.
He was born on October 5, 1952, and is also the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Imran Khan before entering into politics, Khan was an International Cricketer and Captain of the Pakistan Cricket Team which he led to Pakistan’s victory in 1992 Cricket World Cup.
Biography and Early Life
Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi was born to a Pashtun family of Mianwali in Lahore on October 5, 1952, to Ikramullah Khan Niazi and Shaukat Khanum. Imran Khan was the only son of the couple and has four sisters.
Imran Khan belongs to Pashtun ethnicity and Niazi tribe. Haibat Khan Niazi, one of the ancestors of Imran Khan, was Sher Shah Suri’s leading general and the governor of Punjab.
Imran Khan’s mother hails from the Pashtun tribe of Burki which has given several successful cricketers in Pakistan’s history.
His cousins Javed Burki and Majid Khan are also the successful cricketers of Pakistan. Imran Khan is also a descendant of the Sufi warrior-poet Pir Roshan.
He was educated in Lahore and then in England, where he started playing cricket and excelled at it. He also went to Keble College, Oxford University, and studied economics, politics, and philosophy.
He started playing cricket at the age of 13, made his debut at the age of 16 in Lahore, for his home team.
Imran also played cricket for various teams like Dawood Industries, Pakistan International Airlines, Sensex, and County cricket in England during the decade of 70’s.
Imran Khan made his test debut at the age of 18 in the year 1971, and ODI debut in the year 1974.
He also served as the captain for team Pakistan which led the team to win its first and only World Cup in the year 1992.
He holds many records including the all- rounder’s triple. Imran Khan retired permanently from cricket in the yrar 1992.
After retirement, he faced a ball-tampering scandal. Later in the year 2003, he became Pakistan Domestic cricket coach. He was also appointed as the chancellor of the University of Bradford in the year 2005.
Imran founded a political party, Pakistan tehreeke-Insaaf (PTI) on 25th April 1996.
Initially, he lost the elections but as time passed he became more and more popular among the public because of his genuine efforts from Pakistan’s development and his outright nature during criticizing the opposition.
