Eric Bischoff is an American television producer and professional wrestling booker, who is better known as the President of World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and later for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) under its Raw brand. He was an amateur wrestler as well.
Eric Bischoff was born on May 27, 1955 in Detroit, Michigan. His full name is Eric Aaron Bischoff. Not much is known about his childhood and early life, except that he was interested in professional wrestling since his early years.
Prior to professional wrestling, Bischoff had donned several hats and tried his hands at such things like acting in training videos, working as a veterinary assistant, delivering meat etc.
He has owned a landscaping company, and a met shop. He even dabbled in Tae Kwon Do and professional kickboxing.
Bischoff married Kimberly Bowman in 1977, and took divorce in 1980. Four years later in 1984, he married Loree, with whom he has two children; son Garett and daughter Montana. His son made his debut in TNA with the moniker Jackson James in 2010.
In 1989, Bischoff started his career in wrestling with American Wrestling Association (AWA). He got a chance opportunity to appear as an on-air interviewer and host, and he made his profession out of it,
In 1991 AWA closed down, and Bischoff tried for a similar position with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), but was not selected. Later that year, Bischoff joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as an announcer, and debuted at The Great American Bash.
In 1993, WCW Vice President Bob Dhue selected Bischoff for the position of Executive Producer, superseding his bosses Ross and Schiavone. In 1994, Bischoff was made the Executive Vice-President.
To compete with WWF, Bischoff moved WCW production to Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando Florida. Hulk Hogan, who was incidentally shooting there for a show, was contracted to work for WCW.
By 1995, WCW became profitable for the first time and Bischoff’s was made the President of WCW in 1997.
In 1996, Bischoff signed WWF superstar Scott “Razor Ramon” Hall, and Kevin “Diesel” Nash; and named them as “The Outsiders” and depicted as WWF rebels.
To avoid any legal hassle with WWF, Bischoff also asked them in a TV interview if they worked for WWF and the duo denied. Later, when Hulk Hogan also joined in and it was called The New World Order or “nWo”.
The nWo was promoted as a rival attempting to take over WCW. The “WCW vs nWo” successfully captured the imagination of the viewers. This made WCW overtake WWF as the top wrestling promotion in USA.
Bischoff also appeared in television as a character who was the owner of nWo. During this time he also appeared in HBO series and Jay Leno show.
WWF retaliated and rebranded itself and under WWF Attitude and recruited new superstars like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mick Foley, The Rock and many more.
In 1998 WWF overtook WCW. The ratings of WCW dropped, and by 1999 it lost millions.
On September 10, 1999, Bischoff was fired from the President position. Later in 2001, WCF was purchased by WWF
In 2002, WWF under its new identity, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), hired Bischoff as a GM of Raw.
Bischoff made several innovations in WWE such as the Raw Roulette and the Elimination Chamber. He also got his head shaved and during vacation made others GM for a week on rotation.
In 2005, Bischoff developed differences with WWE Champion John Cena and enlisted other wresters to wrangle away the WWE Championship from Cena; but was beaten in his attempts. In December, Eric Bischoff was fired as General Manager. On September 25, 2006, Bischoff appeared, after a yearlong absence, on WWE TV.
