Eddie Bravo was born Edgar A. Cano on May 15, 1970, in Los Angeles County, California. However, he later dropped his biological father’s last name and adopted that of his stepfather. His parents are both from Mexico. Bravo was a very active teenager as he developed an interest in both music and sports.
He learned how to play the guitar at the age of 10 and was a member of his high school’s American football team. Apart from this, Eddie was part of the school’s wrestling team.
Throughout the 1980s, Eddie Bravo played in several music bands. He eventually moved to Hollywood, California in 1991 with the dreams of launching his music career.
He formed his first music band ‘Blackened Kill Symphony’, a rap-metal and goth band, however, it wasn’t quite successful. Bravo also worked as a DJ in order to support himself.
Eddie Bravo developed an interest in martial arts and karate through several visits to the gym. In 1994, he was inspired to take up a professional career in martial arts after watching legendary martial artist Royce Gracie win multiple Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) titles.
Bravo was trained in the Brazilian jiu-jitsu by Jean Jacques Machado, a member of the famed Machado family of martial artists. He also trained in the Jeet Kune Do martial arts system from 1996 to 1998.
When his training was completed, Bravo decided to quit every other form of martial arts to concentrate fully on the jiu-jitsu.
