Rose was born Derrick Martell Rose to a single mother, Brenda Rose, on October 4, 1988, in Chicago, Illinois where he was raised. He has three older brothers; Dwayne, Reggie, and Allan who were all good basketball players but never made it to the league. The brothers maintained a very close relationship and played a father figure role to their youngest brother who showed the likelihood of being a great player as a schoolboy.

Rose attended Simeon Career Academy from 2003 to 2007. He wore the #25 jersey in honor of Ben Wilson who was shot and killed in 1984. As a sophomore, Rose led the Simeon Wolverines with 19.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 8.3 assists and was named to the Parade All-American third team. As a senior, his scoring, assists, and rebounds improved to 25.2, 9.1 and 8.8 respectively. He was named Illinois Mr. Basketball in 2007 and received McDonald’s All-American honors. Rose continued his basketball career at the University of Memphis. He played one season with the Memphis Tigers earning All-American third-team honors in 2008.
Rose was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft. He was named Rookie of the Year after averaging 16.8 points and 6.3 assists. Rose made three consecutive NBA All-Star appearances from 2010 to 2012. In 2011 at age 22, he became the youngest player to win the Most Valuable Player Award. Rose led the Bulls to the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference for the 2011-12 season.
