Carvey was born on June 2, 1955, in Missoula, Montana, the U.S. His nationality is American and ethnicity is mixed(English, German, Irish, Norwegian and Swedish).

He is the son of Billie Carvey(mother) a school teacher, father Bud Carvey a high school business teacher and brother of Brad Carvey the engineer/designer of the Video Toaster.

When he was three years old, his family moved to San Carlos, California in the San Francisco Bay Area. He received his first drum kit at an early age.


He attended Tierra Linda Junior high in San Carlos. Later he studied at Carlmont High School in Belmont. He earned his bachelor degree in broadcast communications from San Francisco State University. After college, he started performing stand up comedy.


Gifted in acting and comedy, Dana Carvey had multiple job options in the earlier days of his showbiz career. He had minor roles in a number of sitcoms and also featured in small films like Halloween II (1981), This Is Spinal Tap (1984), and Racing with the Moon (1984).

1986 can be described as Carvey’s breakout year both in movies as well as on television. He marked his feature film debut in the action-comedy Tough Guys (1986) and also landed a career-defining spot on the cast of the late-night live television show Saturday Night Live (SNL)

Dana Carvey’s successful 7-year stint on SNL earned him a 1993 Primetime Emmy Award for Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program, having also been nominated in the 4 preceding years.

His work on Saturday Night Live came to an end in 1993, however, he has put in several guest appearances on the show ever since.

The multi-talented comic also received another 1993 Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his guest role on the sitcom The Larry Sanders Show. In addition to his flourishing career on TV, Dana Carvey has also headlined several stand-up comedy shows.

He eventually launched his own variety show The Dana Carvey Show in 1996 where he served as the host and the main character, however, the show did not last beyond its first season.

On the big screen, Dana Carvey landed his first starring role in the 1990 comedy film Opportunity Knocks. The talented actor gained even more attention for his lead role opposite Mike Myers in the highly successful comedy film Wayne’s World (1992) and also reprised his role in the film’s sequel (1993).

Dana Carvey also had lead roles in the comedy film Clean Slate (1994) as well as the adventure comedy The Master of Disguise (2002), doubling as co-writer in the latter film
