Billy Graham, was born on November 7, 1918, in Charlotte, North Carolina. His parents were William and Morrow. He had three younger siblings, Melvin, Jean and Katherine. Graham grew up on a dairy farm.

He earned his Bachelor’s degree in theology from Trinity College (1940), and his BA in anthropology from Wheaton College (1943).Graham started out attending revival meetings held by evangelist Mordecai Ham. He moved to Tennessee following his graduation from Sharon High School.

He spent one year at Bob Jones College before transferring to Florida Bible Institute (now Trinity College). Graham was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister in 1939. Next, he moved to Illinois and became a student of Wheaton College.

During his tenure, he met his future wife Ruth McCue Bell. The two wed on August 13, 1943. Graham served briefly as a pastor at the First Baptist Church in Western Springs, Illinois.

He became the first full-time evangelist of the evangelical missionary group ‘Youth for Christ’. He also served as president of Northwestern Schools from 1947 to 1952.

Graham hosted the ‘Billy Graham Crusades’ from 1947 to 2005. He founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) in 1950. His weekly radio program ‘Hour of Decision’ ran from 1950 to 1954. It was broadcasted on over 1000 radio stations across the nation.

The BGEA ministries included World Wide Pictures,, Christianity Today, Decision Magazine and the syndicated newspaper column My Answer. The Billy Graham Evangelistic Film Ministry was established in 1952. Graham served as spiritual adviser to several American presidents.

He famously bailed Martin Luther King, Jr. out of jail in the 1960s. In addition to preaching, he’s published several books, including Angels: God’s Secret Agents (1975), Death and the Life After (1994), and The Journey (2006). Graham was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1983) by President Ronald Reagan.

Billy Graham died on February 21, 2018, at the age of 99. His reported cause of death was natural causes. He passed away at his home in Montreat, North Carolina. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (1992) and suffered from declining health in recent years.
